We are headed back to DAYTONA for NCA College Nationals!!!
This letter will give you some general information and explain some of the commitment and expectations that come along with being a part of the ECC team.
Tryouts for the 2013-2014 winter / competition season will be SUNDAY NOVEMBER 3RD, 5:00 – 7:00 pmAND MONDAY NOVEMBER 4TH, 3:00-6:00 pm. Both days will be at the Buffalo Niagara Court Center in West Seneca. To be eligible for tryouts, you must attend both days as well as meet the following criteria:
- Be an ECC student, any campus (must be full time for Spring 2014). Please bring a copy of your current class schedule to tryouts.
- Have official ECC medical forms filled out - physical and insurance- and hand in AT TRYOUTS! (can be downloaded from the ECC website)
- Maintain a GPA of 2.0 during all semesters in which you are an ECC Cheerleader
At tryouts, you will be taught a Game Day cheer/chant and will also need to perform the following jumps: toe touch, double toe touch, right, left and front hurdlers and a pike. On the final tryout day, material will be reviewed and then candidates will try out in groups of 4. It is required that you wear a white tank top / sports bra / fitted t-shirt and black shorts and a bow on the final day. Besides the material and jumps, you will also be judged on the following: motions / technique, attitude, expression, voice, genuine spirit and potential. You will also need to show a round-off as well as a backhandspring with spotters (if needed). Established tumblers will need to show: standing skills, toe touch backhandspring and your best pass. Gymnastics will be worked on throughout the season and mandatory team tumbling sessions are part of our weekly practice. We will also be stunting, so be prepared to show what you’ve got. Flyers must be able to show range of skill flexibility and versatility. Bases / backs must show strength, versatility & dependability. Each candidate will try out and be judged equally, regardless of previous team status but attitude and improvement of returning veterans will also be strongly considered. After everyone has tried out, the new team will be announced and there will be a team meeting discussing specifics of rules and responsibilities.
Our division at Nationals is becoming increasingly more competitive and difficult. This year will focus on technique, stunt / routine creativity / difficulty and tumbling. If you do not have tumbling experience, it is STRONGLY suggested that you attend a tumbling class of some kind before tryouts! Most area gyms offer Open Workout / Tumbling times / classes. Here are a few gyms you can look into: Sub Zero (Lancaster), WNY Outlaws (Lockport / Clarence), Buffalo Envy (Southtowns), Gymnastics Unlimited (Southtowns), Stumpfs (Williamsville), Flips (Lockport), Buffalo Niagara Court Center (West Seneca).
Weekly practices will begin on Thursday Nov. 7th. Practice days are Mondays 3:00 – 5:00 pm and Thursdays 3 – 6 pm at BNCC.
Our routine choreographers will be coming to town …. It is absolutely MANDATORY that every member of the team is available the weekend of November 15 – 17!!! If you have a conflict with these dates, it is advised that you DO NOT try out for this season!
Since we are a community college, there are some expenses associated with being a part of the cheerleading team. The following is an approximate list of possible expenses:
*Choreography * Nationals trip * practice clothes
*Monthly practice facility fees – approximately $20 / month
We will begin fundraising immediately to alleviate most of these costs and build our booster account. Individual participation in fundraisers will determine individual expenses.
We will begin cheering at home basketball games in January and begin competing in late January / early February. Along with competing, we look forward to hosting our 6th annual Patty Shelley Memorial Competition in February and performing at ECICs!
AND….We have already received a bid to return to Daytona Beach and compete at NCACollege Nationals next April!!!!
Cheerleaders also receive 1 college credit (as a PE course) per each semester of participation. Each cheerleader is given a grade for the course based on game & practice attendance. Cheerleaders are also responsible for maintaining a GPA of 2.0 in order to remain eligible.
The upcoming season is looking to be our BEST YET; I hope that you will decide to tryout for a spot on our team!! We are excited to be stronger, BETTER and get back to the Finals Bandshell in Daytona!
If you have any questions or if you would like additional information, please contact me at any time. I look forward to meeting and working with you soon.
